Spotlight mid April - mid June
SpotlightTop Teen Chef has been a wonderful success thanks to the hard work of Santiago! He spent time learning from two Montreal chefs, Chef Michael Minorgan and Chef Derek Bocking. Time now to see if he remembered what he learned from at least one of them! To that end, Santiago was hustled off to the EMSB headquarters to serve up a meal to the staff - our thanks for all the EMSB has done for Marymount over the years. Read More...

Isolation
Isolation After a regular day at school, some students need to remain to the detention room for their bad behavior. Everything seems to be fine until the fire alarm goes off. Following the regular procedures of the school, they all leave the room to go outside. As they get to the door, their detention teacher is the first one to go out. As soon as she steps out, something terrible happens…

Isolation is a bilingual web series about survival. Students need are confined in their own school and have to survive all together because they don’t know what is happening on the outside (or they are cut off from the outside). They will have to deal with the language difference, the amount of food left and they will have to get along to make important decisions. But what is really happening? You won’t want to miss the action, twists and turns of isolation.

Coming up on April 3, Chef Derek Bocking, Head Chef of Icone on St. Laurent, will be joining Santiago when he once again learns from a mentor how to prepare a special menu chosen by Chef Derek. Bocking was one of the contestants of the first show of Top Chef Canada! Watch Video

Marymount Students Meet a Hero - Mr. Canavan

Remembrance Day is not just one day or one minute at Marymount Academy.

On November 6, the students at Marymount joined together in assembly and heard first hand what it was like to be sent away from home, from your family, from everything you knew, straight into the ravages of war.

“...happened to be smoking a cigarette at the time. And we hopped out, got into this slit trench and a bomb went off so close that I couldn't see daylight. It blew the cigarette right out of my mouth. And I thought, good heavens, this is the end of the war.”

Mr. Alan Canavan is a World War Two veteran who enlisted in the summer of 1941. He served overseas during the Normandy and the Northwest Europe campaign with the intelligence section of the 7th Reconnaissance Regiment (17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars), the reconnaissance unit of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.

Now, at the age of 92, Canavan faced the assembly of students and told tthem of the horrors of being in a foreign country with bombs falling around you, eating rationed food - a small pat of margarine straight into the mouth because he had nothing to spread it on - watching his friends fall beside him, but having to move on. In one case, he was  severely reprimanded for using his own bandage to bind the wound of another soldier - “I did what I felt I had to do”.

The room was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Canavan brought the realities of war to the students, dispelling any thought of grandeur and heroism.  When he came home to Canada, unlike in the US, there was no special welcome, no parades, he went right back to work.

The lessons learned by the students from Canavan’s talk are invaluable. They bear repeating, and should not not be forgotten, for the students are the future.

Remembering our Veterans continues with official ceremonies on November 11, 2013, in the school and with some students attending Remembrance Day in Ottawa.

Marymount Academy Says Thank You To Our Local Police

Here’s a recap letter of our visit to our Local Police Station 11, Friday, Sept 20th with a picture from the afternoon. Dear Mr. Rousseau, Ms. Cote and all the wonderful police men and women, Thank you for your warm welcome at the police station, the students couldn’t stop speaking about how glad they were to have met you and upon return there were others who expressed their disappointment that we did not take them along. It should not be rare to appreciate people who make a difference in our lives, either directly or indirectly. We live in a society where we are interdependent and even though we do not often get the chance to say it, we are thankful for the chance of receiving good education, the materials that we have and the people who make it possible. The police force is just one of those communities that makes a difference in our lives. They make education possible in a special way; by keeping our roads, our community and our town safe so we can go to work and school without fear or bother. We at Marymount Academy (School), salute all the men and women of the Police for all their hard work and dedication. The program held at your police station thanks only a small group of employees but it is a token of our love and appreciation for the entire personnel. We would just like to say: “Marymount vous remercie”
